Cotton vs Performance T-Shirts — Which Should You Print On?
The fabric decision is simpler than the marketing makes it: what will people be doing in the shirt?
Choose cotton when…
- The shirt is for everyday wear, events, staff or retail
- Softness and a premium hand-feel matter
- You want the widest print options — cotton takes DTG beautifully for photos and detail
Cotton breathes well at rest, feels natural, and ages nicely. Its weakness is sweat: it absorbs roughly its own weight in water, gets heavy, and dries slowly. Our budget, premium and heavyweight tees are all cotton.
Choose performance polyester when…
- The shirt is for sport, training or anything sweaty — see sportswear printing
- Quick drying matters (tournaments, multi-game days, gym bags)
- The shirt will be washed constantly — polyester shrugs off wash cycles
Performance fabric wicks sweat outward and dries in a fraction of cotton's time. The trade-off: it feels technical rather than soft, and it needs DTF printing (which is exactly what we use on it — prints that stretch with the fabric).
The honest matrix
- Office, bar, event, gift → cotton
- Football, running, gym, sports day → performance
- Both (a club that trains and socialises) → performance for play, cotton for the clubhouse — mixed orders still earn the full quantity discount
